Did you know about Ancient Lights – small signs with big legal power?

In London and beyond, you’ll sometimes spot plaques reading “Ancient Lights” beneath old windows.

They assert the legal right to light – if a window has had natural daylight for 20+ years, a neighbour can’t build something that blocks it.

The rule comes from the Prescription Act 1832 and is still enforced today. Developers must assess light and may need to redesign or compensate neighbours.

The plaques aren’t required by law, but were put up as a warning to developers – and yes, property owners can still add them today. The law protects the light, not the sign.

Famous examples are in London (Fitzrovia, Soho, Clerkenwell), but you’ll also find them in Dorset, Kent, Yorkshire and other parts of England.

The doctrine never caught on elsewhere – in the US it was abandoned as too restrictive for urban growth.
